Obituary for Percy D. Johnson

Percy D. Johnson, 80, of Kunkletown, passed away at home on August 28, 2013 surrounded by his loving family after a brief illness.
Percy was born in Wind Gap on April 10, 1933, and was the son of the late Charles W. and Nora E. (Beck) Johnson.
He was the loving husband of Pauline F. (Serfass) Johnson. The couple were married on August 25, 1956 in Wind Gap and recently celebrated their 57th Wedding Anniversary. The couple resided in Hemlock Lake.
He attended school in the Pen Argyl School District in Wind Gap.
Percy was drafted into the U.S. Army toward the end of the Korean War in 1953 and was in the 2nd Platoon, 4th Infantry Division, 8th Infantry Regiment, Fox Company stationed in Budigen, Germany from 1953-1955. He was discharged from the U.S. Army in April 1955. He was a member of American Legion Post 927 in Gilbert and served as the secretary of the organization for many years in the 1970's.
He was employed in the garment industry as a presser and general handyman for over 40 years. Percy worked for Larry Liero Blouse Company in Wind Gap from 1951-1953; Better Made Manufacturing Company in Effort from 1955-1986; Blue Bay in Tannersville from 1986-1991; Quartet Fashion in Moorestown from 1991-1993; and Scotty's Fashions Cutting Room as a cutting assistant from 1993-1995. Percy retired in June 1995.
He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, uncle and friend who was devoted to his family. He enjoyed baseball, country music, fishing, camping, taking long walks and sitting around the campfire with his family. He chauffeured many of his co-workers to work throughout his long career in the garment industry. He was also a general handyman after his retirement including lawn maintenance for many of his neighbors.
We were blessed with the presence of Percy in our lives. He will be missed deeply by his children: Edward Johnson and his wife, Tracy of Reeders; Connie Johnson of Shillington; Kathleen Hodgdon and her husband, Thomas of Sciota; Dennis Johnson and his parter, Robyn Warner of Gilbert; and Patricia Hopkins and her husband, David of Red Lion.
He was the loving grandpa to 11 grandchildren who were enriched by his part in their lives: Timothy Hodgdon of Sciota; Michael Nocher and his wife, Barbara of Lockport, Illinois; Ashley Johnson of Kunkletown; Kevin Johnson of Kunkletown; Kristen Johnson of Reeders; Laura Hopkins of Liberal, Kansas; Ryan Hopkins of Morgantown, West Virginia; April Donnelly and her husband, Jermaine of Albrightsville; Samantha Warner of Saylorsburg; Tiffany Warner of Effort; and Trisha Warner of Gilbert. He also had three great grandchildren: Robert Surplus and Michael Nocher, Jr. of Lockport, Illinois; and Gianna Donnelly of Albrightsville.
He was survived by seven sisters: Carole Sutton of Williamson, New York; Wilhelmina Kroboth of Nazareth; Ethlyn Achenbach of Wind Gap; Naoma Whitmore of East Stroudsburg; Marjorie Redshaw of Rochester, New York; Wintha Knitter of Marion, New York; and Shirley Fehr of Saylorsburg; two brothers: Earl Johnson of Wind Gap and John Johnson of Rochester, New York; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Arlene Johnson and Arvonia Smith; his brother, Raymond; and his daughter, June.
Friends and family are welcome to offer condolences from 11:00 a.m. until the time of the service on Sunday, September 1st at Kresge Funeral Home, Route 209, Brodheadsville. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday at the funeral home with Rev. Dean Frey officiating.
Percy will be buried in Dotter's Corner Cemetery in Kunkletown following a brief military ceremony.
